Published: Sunday, April 25th, 2010

LuxSci has updated its web-based email composition tool in two significant ways:

  2. Composition of SecureLine-encrypted email messages is now simpler and more user friendly.

How can I remember all these ##@! passwords?

Published: Saturday, April 17th, 2010

It is a fact of life that passwords are the keys to our online kingdoms … and that keeping these passwords safe is critical to preventing identity theft, ensuring corporate security, keeping private things private, and much more.

However, the number of distinct places that we log into seems to constantly grow.  We have to use secure passwords for all of them and should not use the same password for any two of them.  Oh ya, we should also change our passwords frequently!

Its dizzying and makes your head spin.  Few can remember the plethora of changing passwords and, in desperation, either use the same poor password for everything or use written cheat sheets listing all of the user names and passwords for easy reference (and easy peeking by others should they get a hold of it).

Updates to Right Clicking, Full Screen Mode, and Task List Widgets

Published: Thursday, April 15th, 2010

LuxSci has introduced several new features this week that enhance the usability of parts of its web interface.  These include:

  • Right-Click Context Menus in WebAides: All WebAides (i.e. address books, calendars, tasks, etc.) now support right clicking on list entries and on the WebAides themselves to bring up a context menu of useful options — like “Delete WebAide”, “Subscribe to WebAide”, “Tag Entry”, etc.  This makes WebAide use simpler and more natural.  The WebMail interface already supports right-click context menus.
  • “Full Screen Mode” Tool Bar Option: Users can now choose to add a tool bar command for toggling on and off “Full Screen Mode” — the mode of viewing WebMail and WebAides which hides the page headers and footers to give maximal screen space for working in these tools.  This tool bar command can be added in users’ Preferences area.
  • Task List Widgets: LuxSci’s Task List Widgets have a new optional setting where you can hide tasks from display until they are near or past their due date.  If you have many tasks and many of them are for the future, your task list Widget can be configured to show you only what is “due soon”, and you can specify what “soon” means.  Use the “Properties” of your Task List Widget to configure this new setting.
  • Dates and Times: When forwarding, replying, or annotating an email message, the “date” that is included in the text of the email to indicate when this was done now includes the time and timezone.  For example, instead of  “On April 15th, 2010, XYZ said”, it will now say “On April 15th 2010 12:15:16 EDT, XYZ said”.  This provides both additional accuracy and eliminates confusion when people are working in different time zones.

LuxSci Feature Updates

Published: Monday, April 12th, 2010

We have released several minor, but useful feature updates today.  These include:

  • New Email More Visible: When you have new messages in your current email folder in WebMail, not only will the “get email” button slowly pulsate, but now the title of the window will slowly alternate text indicating that “New Messages Have Arrived”.  This makes the presence of new messages visible even if your window is minimized or if WebMail is not in the active tab of your web browser.
  • Empty Trash Tool Bar Command: A new “Empty Trash” tool bar command is available for adding to your WebMail tool bar.  If you find yourself performing this action frequently, you may want to add this tool bar command via your Preferences.
  • Auto-Responder Reply-To address: The “Reply-to” email address for email auto-responders is no longer “mailnull@luxsci.net”; it is now the same as your configured “From” address.  This means that “luxsci.net” will not show up in your auto-responders (unless that is part of your email address), and it means that replies to your auto-responders can make it back to you.
  • Preferences: The User Preferences pages in the LuxSci web interface have been updated to look better, be easier to navigate, and to make it easier to find the more popular preferences.
  • SecureForm: The SecureForm service for securely emailing  the results of secure form posts to you has been augmented.  You can now have any kind of file pre-filled and emailed to you with the form data filled in your configured place holders.  I.e. upload XML, RSS, Text, HTML, or other file types with place holders where your form data should be placed.  These place holders will be replaced with your form data and the resulting file emailed to you.To use this feature, simply follow the same instructions for pre-filling an HTML file and use the “pre-filled HTML” file option with your arbitrary file type.

Tagging is now Quicker and Easier!

Published: Friday, April 9th, 2010

Tagging of email messages and WebAide entries (i.e. contacts, calendar appointments, files, etc) with color-coded keyword and key phrase tags has been a feature of LuxSci for a long time.

However, the latest enhancements of LuxSci’s web interface make it even faster and more natural to tag and untag messages and entries:

SecureForm: now with SMTP TLS for Secure Form Email Delivery

Published: Friday, April 2nd, 2010

SecureForm is LuxSci’s service that makes it quick and easy to collect data, including files, from web and PDF form posts and have that data emailed to one or more recipients and/or archived in a LuxSci WebAides document storage area.  The “Secure” in SecureForm refers in part to the fact that the emailed form data can be secured using PGP or S/MIME.  This, combined with enforced use of SSL, ensures that the form data is secured from end-to-end … from submission by the end user to the receipt by the web site administrator.  This ensures HIPAA compliance and strong security for that data.

Now, SecureForm supports the option of secure delivery of form data emails to recipients using TLS instead of PGP or S/MIME.  While use of TLS only is less secure than PGP or S/MIME, it is more user friendly — there is no need for certificates or extra steps to decrypt the messages once they arrive.  TLS does provide transport encryption from LuxSci’s servers to the recipients servers and thus still provides HIPAA compliant form data delivery.
