Announcing LuxSci Widgets!

LuxSci has re-designed its “Welcome Page” — the first page most people see when they login to LuxSci’s web site — to use “widgets” and to be fully customizable.

“Widgets” are small areas of a web page that display specific self-contained bits of information. Widgets are common — you may be familiar with some of them such as small web page boxes displaying Facebook information, weather, stocks, games, etc.

LuxSci’s Welcome Page now lets users select exactly which widgets to display and makes it easy to re-arrange them in the order and layout preferred. Users can select from many LuxSci-specific Widgets which access email, calendar, task, blog, or account administration and status information, or choose from widgets that display the content of RSS news feeds or create notes. Users can also add arbitrary third-party widgets (like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, weather, or even a virtual pet) to their Welcome Pages.

What widgets are available?

LuxSci is currently developing a more robust and powerful library of widgets. At the time of release (July 24, 2009), users can select from:

	Custom Widgets Define your own widget using a block of arbitrary HTML and JavaScript. Paste in the definition of any third-party widget. You can have as many custom widgets as you like.
	RSS Feed View the recent posts from any RSS (news) feed. You can have as many RSS feed widgets as you like.
	Check Email Displays the number of new messages and total messages in selected email folders. Gives links to access your email folders and email tools quickly.
	Today’s Calendar Display today’s events from selected WebAide Calendars. You can define multiple Calendar widgets for different views of your accessible Calendar WebAides.
	Tasks Due Display today’s tasks and over due tasks from selected Task WebAides. You can define multiple Task widgets for different views of your accessible Tasks WebAides.
	Blog View Display recent entries in a WebAide Blog to which you have read access. You can define multiple Blog widgets to display the content of multiple blogs.
	Links Display a clickable list of all links in selected Links WebAides. I.e., this creates a list of bookmarks / favorites. You can define multiple Links widgets to display the content of multiple sets of Links.
	Notepad Add a small notepad editor to your page. Any text entered is auto-saved and re-displayed whenever you return to the page. You can create multiple Notepad widgets.
	News and Notices Important maintenance announcements and other notices.
	My Profile Overview of your personal information.
	Support Tickets View a list of recently opened and closed technical support tickets.
	Disk Space See how much disk space you are using.
	Account Administration Quick links to many commonly used account administration areas. Getting started information.

What’s Next?

In the next few weeks, LuxSci will update its Account Administration home page to also support Widgets — personalized account management to meet the needs of each customer. Look for more widgets, more accessibility and more versatility with your LuxSci account.
