Keep Everything in Sync with Apple iOS5 and LuxSci MobileSync

Published: Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Apple iOS v5 for iPad and iPhone is out!  iCloud is great, allowing easy synchronization of your Apple devices and limited synch with Outlook.

For easy synchronization of your iPhone, iPad, and all other mobile devices (i.e. Blackberry, Android, Windows Mobile) and LuxSci’s WebAide collaboration tools (Tasks / Calendars / Contacts), LuxSci MobileSync is still the best way to go.

Apple iOS5 with LuxSci Mobile Sync:

  • Still supports multiple calendar and contact list synchronizations
  • Still supports mail synchronization, Push email, and secure sending
  • New – Supports automatic synchronization of iOS “Reminders” with WebAide Task Lists
  • New – Create new email folders from the Mail application
  • New – Calendar events now support separate time zones for each event, making collaboration with folks in differing time zones much easier.
  • New – Flag Support. The “Flagged” status of email messages now synchronizes
  • New – Offline email move and delete.  If you move or delete mail while disconnected, these operations will now be performed when your device reconnects
  • Updated – Improves notification to users of new mail and other items
  • Updated – Server-side email folder searching has been improved.

Additionally, with LuxSci WebAideSync, you can also have your Calendars/Tasks/Contacts automatically synchronized with Microsoft Outlook as well.

HIPAA Alert: Contacts, Calendar Events and Tasks may contain ePHI!

Published: Friday, January 21st, 2011

When health care organizations review their operations to see where electronic protected health information (ePHI) is being saved, transmitted, and viewed, a great deal of time is spent on the obvious candidates: email, chat, stored files and health records, etc.

Many overlook the fact that ePHI can be embedded in Contacts, Calendars, and Tasks.  Consider for example:

Protect your mobile data from theft with “Remote Wipe”

Published: Friday, January 14th, 2011

If your mobile device (e.g., iPad or Blackberry) is lost or stolen, then you have no control over who may gain access to:

  • Viewing existing and new email messages
  • All of your contacts
  • Your calendar appointments
  • Sending email as you
  • and more…

This is pretty serious, especially for folks who are subject to regulations and compliance laws.

For example, if a Nurse, using an iPad to manage patient appointments or to communicate via email with remote doctors, were to lose that iPad and it were to be accessed by someone else, then that may become a HIPAA “breach” (an unauthorized disclosure of protected health information) and the Nurse’s organization may be subject to stiff monetary fines and bad publicity.

Is Blackberry HIPAA Compliant? What You Need To Know

Published: Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

We are often approached by customers wanting to use their blackberry mobile devices to send and receive email that may contain electronic Protected Health Information (ePHI).  Such customers, when they must abide by the HIPAA and HITECH laws governing medical privacy, must comply with a long set of regulations that covers, among other things, how ePHI may be transmitted over the Internet.

This article deals with the security of sending and receiving email on a Blackberry configured for Internet email services (i.e. it does not apply to those connecting to an Blackberry Enterprise Server and Exchange).

Why isn’t a Blackberry Secure Enough for Barack Obama?

Published: Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

As you may have heard, Barack Obama is tethered to his Blackberry.  It’s great to have a highly technical President of the United States, but it is really shaking things up.  All of the policies and procedures date back to times before PDAs and smart phones.  Obama is really struggling to cling to the same technical edge in his day-to-day affairs that he has enjoyed to date. But the security team at the Oval Office has other plans.

No Blackberry for Obama!

Instead, he gets what is being dubbed the “BarackBerry” — a high security blackberry replacement.  Why is the Blackberry (and similar devices) such a security concern?
