What Makes a Web Site HIPAA-Secure?

Published: Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Doctors and medical professionals are feeling a growing pressure to get their business online (i.e. even use of electronic prescriptions is being pushed).  This includes making available protected health information to patients via a web site and collecting similar private information from patients or would-be patients. If doctors can show that they are using digital systems with their health care practices in a meaningful way by 2011, they may be eligible for some serious money (part of the proposed stimulus package — the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH)).

However, where the health information of an identifiable individual is involved, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is the official compliance document.  So, what do these requirements mean and how can HIPAA be followed in the context of a website?

Having Problems Sending Email Because Your ISP is Blacklisted?

Published: Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

We are observing growing numbers of users trying to send legitimate email messages only to be blocked because the IP address that they are getting from their Internet Service Provider (ISP) for their personal computer is on some major blacklist, like SpamHaus.  Comcast, for example, has been the focus of many of these issues lately. This message blocking often happens even if a user is sending outbound email through a legitimate email provider like LuxSci.

Users invariably ask:

  • Why is the mail blocked even though I am sending through LuxSci or some other email provider and not directly from my ISP?
  • What can I do about it?

Fortunately, there is a good reason why the blocks occur and an easy solution to them … with LuxSci’s anonymous SMTP service.

Published: Monday, January 26th, 2009

LuxSci has added plug-ins to its WebMail application in version 10.10 of LuxSci’s software which includes two JAVA applets.  So, were we hesitant to add JAVA applets, FLASH, ActiveX, and other plugins in the first place?  And why the sudden change of heart?  What does this mean for our customers who are concerned about security or who do not want or cannot use JAVA applets?

Updates to Email Link Click Protection

Published: Monday, January 26th, 2009

LuxSci’s Premium Email Filtering services include an optional "Click Protection" module that allows administrators to intercept the action of a user clicking on a link in an email message in order to  a) give the users warning,  b) log where people click through to, c) block clicking, etc.  This feature helps protect end users from phishing attacks that come in via email, where malicious senders try to trick users into going to fake URLs so they can steal their identity or payment data (i.e. the classic fraudulent emails purporting to be from "PayPal" come to mind as a prime example).

On Tuesday, January 27th, an administrative option within ClickProtect that currently tracks URL click throughs while allowing users to visit websites linked within email messages without a warning is being removed.

Why isn’t a Blackberry Secure Enough for Barack Obama?

Published: Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

As you may have heard, Barack Obama is tethered to his Blackberry.  It’s great to have a highly technical President of the United States, but it is really shaking things up.  All of the policies and procedures date back to times before PDAs and smart phones.  Obama is really struggling to cling to the same technical edge in his day-to-day affairs that he has enjoyed to date. But the security team at the Oval Office has other plans.

No Blackberry for Obama!

Instead, he gets what is being dubbed the “BarackBerry” — a high security blackberry replacement.  Why is the Blackberry (and similar devices) such a security concern?
