Planned Upgrades from PHP 5.5 to PHP 5.6

Tuesday, January 24th, 2017

LuxSci will be upgrading servers that are currently running PHP v5.5 to the latest version of PHP v5.6 on/after February 15th, 2017.  PHP v5.5 is no longer receiving updates from the community and thus is not viable for continued use.  PHP v5.6 will continue to be supported for the next 2 years.

For those one servers that are running PHP v5.5, please review the following upgrade guide, as there are some changes in going to PHP v5.6 that are incompatible with how PHP v5.5 works(this is why we do not just auto-upgrade everyone without notice):

PHP 5.5 to 5.6 Upgrade Guide

Some of the backwards incompatible changes involve:

  • json_decode and boolean values
  • SSL/TLS certificate verification will be enabled
  • mcrypt changes

Please contact LuxSci support if you have any questions.

Simplified FTP/SFTP Management of WordPress, Joomla, and other CMS-based web sites

Thursday, June 27th, 2013

Most modern content management systems (CMS) for web sites, like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, etc., are PHP-based.  So, when these sites are run by the web server, they generally run with as the web server server for maximum speed/performance.*

It all works well and easily …. until you want to also manage these files via FTP or SFTP.  In general, when one uses FTP or SFTP to connect, your session is owned by the user that you are logging into FTP or SFTP with … and that is not the “web server”. This causes problems:

WordPress for HIPAA and ePHI? Is that a good idea?

Tuesday, February 12th, 2013
For a deep dive, see our white paper: Securing WordPress

WordPress is an extremely popular content management system for both blogging and creating web sites.  It’s popular because it is quick to set up, easy to administer, has a very large supported base of add-ons, and looks good.  As a result, many LuxSci customers use WordPress in one fashion or another for their web sites hosted at LuxSci.

As we cater to a large segment of customers who have specific compliance needs, e.g. HIPAA compliance, we frequently are asked about using WordPress with ePHI … e.g. using WordPress to provide access to protected health information for members of the WordPress site.

Can this be compliant?  Is it a good idea?

Improved Online File Management and Sharing

Friday, February 18th, 2011

LuxSci has revised its “File Manager” tool, which provides a secure web-based interface for managing files in a user’s “FTP Space”.  This tool is a good alternative to FTP when additional security and auditing is required or for file access without the need for a third party FTP (or SFTP) program is desirable.

The enhancements to the LuxSci File Manager include:

Zend Optimizer now Supported with LuxSci Web Hosting

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

zend frameworkLuxSci has added support for the Zend Optimizer to its web hosting services.  The Zend Optimizer:

  • Runs PHP applications encoded using Zen Guard.  This is the “most widely accepted PHP encryption product on the market, it protects your application from unlicensed use and reverse engineering.”
  • Runs normal PHP scripts faster than would otherwise be possible.

All web sites on LuxSci that use PHP are now automatically being optimized for performance by the Zend Optimizer.

LuxSci also supports the ionCube PHP Loader.
