New “Mobile Mode” for PDAs and Smart Phones

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

LuxSci has offered an “Xpress” WebMail portal for many years.  The portal is fast, simple, and works with most devices because it does not use any JavaScript or cookies, and uses few images.  The Xpress portal is good for security, privacy, and access from legacy devices, as well as over very slow connections.

However, the mobile device landscape is quickly changing.  Starting with the iPhone and its full-featured Safari web browser, to the Android, the Palm Pre, and the availability of browsers like OperaMini on many phones, it is now the case that many “cutting edge” phones actually have fast web browsers that fully support JavaScript, AJAX, CSS, and broadband — all the technologies formerly the purview of the desktop.  Their major drawback, however, is still the very small screen. Many of these browsers work perfectly well with most web sites, including LuxSci’s full-featured WebMail portal; however, it can be problematic and painful to use and navigate sites designed for large displays on these device’s small screens.

Enter LuxSci’s new “Mobile Mode”.  Mobile Mode is a new feature of LuxSci’s regular WebMail interface that is available when it detects that you are accessing it using a mobile device, such as an iPhone.

“Please Note” – Message Annotation for your Email

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Have you ever wanted to add a note to an email for yourself or someone else?  The digital age has seen the paper-clipped note go the way of the dinosaur.  Today’s software programs may offer electronic notes and comments, but none specifically for email that is also shareable across programs.  Until now.   LuxSci has a feature in WebMail to add notes to messages that can be viewed by everyone and in most email programs.

Except for Thunderbird and a few others, we are not aware of an email client that lets you make "notes" on email messages… and those that do are only visible in program that created them and not by anyone else looking at the message via IMAP or WebMail. We got to thinking of how useful a note would be that is part of the email message and viewable by anyone,  in any email program.  The LuxSci email note literally "sticks" with the message as it is forwarded to someone or copied/moved to another email folder.

This process helps you to both sort your messages into categories and to visually identify particular types of messages by color. This new and more visual system simplifies management of your email, especially if you are sharing your folder with others via IMAP or WebMail.
