Updates to Email Link Click Protection

LuxSci’s Premium Email Filtering services include an optional "Click Protection" module that allows administrators to intercept the action of a user clicking on a link in an email message in order to  a) give the users warning,  b) log where people click through to, c) block clicking, etc.  This feature helps protect end users from phishing attacks that come in via email, where malicious senders try to trick users into going to fake URLs so they can steal their identity or payment data (i.e. the classic fraudulent emails purporting to be from "PayPal" come to mind as a prime example).

On Tuesday, January 27th, an administrative option within ClickProtect that currently tracks URL click throughs while allowing users to visit websites linked within email messages without a warning is being removed.

If you are an administrator and have ClickProtect with this silent option enabled, you should change it to another recommended option. If you do not change your policy settings prior to the change, ClickProtect will be disabled for all of your users as of the day the change is put in place. This will have no effect on the user experience.

Administrators can choose among the following email link click through tracking options for their users at "Email Defense Portal > Email Defense > Policies > Content > ClickProtect":

  • Display warning message before redirecting – this option cautions users, via a warning message, about visiting unknown websites, but allows the user to proceed to the linked site.

  • Display warning message and deny clickthroughs – this option cautions users, via warning message, about visiting unknown websites and blocks their attempt to visit the linked site.

Please note that ClickProtect statistics currently available with the click through tracking option will be available if either of the two recommended options is selected.

Why? – The policy option is being removed in order to streamline the policy sets.

If you do not have "ClickProtect" enabled, but have LuxSci’s Premium Spam and Virus filtering, you can enable it by logging into your filtering portal and going to "Email Defense > Policies > Content > ClickProtect".  If you do not have Email Defense, please contact sales for information about ordering or upgrading.
