What is Accessibility?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), passed in 1990, helps ensure that anyone with a disability will receive the same opportunities as an individual without a disability. Some of the most visible changes included requiring new buildings have wheelchair ramps and accessible bathrooms. However, this law does not exclusively apply to physical infrastructure but also to online services. Poor technology implementations should not prevent people from accessing information online.

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) were developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to make accessibility more manageable for web designers and developers. The W3C is an international community that develops regulations and recommendations for the internet to help ensure its longevity and usability. The W3C established the WCAG standards to provide detailed guidelines for creating websites, digital content, and markup through accessible approaches that work seamlessly with assistive technologies used by people with disabilities.
